Wayfinding Signage Scheme - Bracknell BID

Wayfinding Signage Scheme

The BID has funded a comprehensive wayfinding scheme designed to make navigating the BID area easier for pedestrians and cyclists. This initiative, which includes the installation of 3 Welcome signs, 13 directory totems featuring detailed maps, 18 fingerpost signs, and 7 subway wall signs, aims to enhance accessibility while encouraging sustainable and safe active travel.

The new signage follows a well-planned wayfinding strategy to make navigation easier for users. The BID area has been divided into separate zones to help simplify orientation. These zones include Cain, Farleymoor-Longshot, Western-Downmill, and Downshire within the Western Business Area, and Doncastle, Willoughby, Lovelace, and Ellesfield in the Southern Business Area. Each sign is colour-coded to match the zone it is located in, making it easy for users to identify their location and navigate effectively.

The directory totems are a particularly useful feature of the scheme. Each totem includes a map with buildings colour-coded to their respective zones, providing an at-a-glance overview of the area. Additionally, the totems list key landmarks, amenities, office parks, industrial parks, and buildings—offering visitors and employees vital information as they move through the area.

One of the key goals of the wayfinding project is to make it easier for people working and visiting the BID area to get around, whether on foot or by bike. The new signage provides clear directions, helping pedestrians and cyclists navigate the area with ease, reducing confusion and improving the overall experience for everyone.

Encouraging active travel is a growing priority, and Bracknell BID’s wayfinding scheme aligns with the push for healthier, more sustainable transport options. By making walking and cycling routes clearer and more accessible, the project encourages people to choose these more eco-friendly options, helping to reduce carbon emissions and support the local community’s health and well-being.

The new wayfinding infrastructure also plays an important role in building a stronger identity for Bracknell’s Western and Southern business areas. The signage is branded with the Bracknell BID logo, helping to create a cohesive look throughout the area and further establish the BID’s unique presence. This project not only improves navigation but also elevates the profile of local businesses, reinforcing the high standards and values they represent.

With the introduction of consistent and well-placed signage, the BID area now benefits from clearer navigation, which helps boost both its visibility and attractiveness to workers, visitors, and potential new businesses.

This project has been funded through a partnership between Bracknell BID, Bracknell Forest Council, and the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, demonstrating the strength of collaboration between public and private sectors. The wayfinding scheme is a great example of how different stakeholders can work together to improve a local area, benefiting both businesses and the wider community.
